The man who took hostages at Discovery Communications headquarters on September 1st, in an effort to get the message out that we humans should stop reproducing, wanted to share a cogent message. Unfortunately, his means of delivery was insane.
Today, we start our new blog – Enough of Us – in which we advocate that we should think twice before making children.
No sooner do we initiate the blog, when WHAMMO! a guy comes along who makes all of us who believe that humanity must use constraint in reproducing, look like a bunch of weirdos.
Our Web site, Enoughof.us, presents the issues we raise in our book, Enough of Us: Why we should think twice before making children. We discourage would-be parents from procreating. There are scores of reasons why we take this stand. One of the most important considerations for us is the chance that offspring can live lives fraught with illness, including mental illness.
So here is James Jae Lee, a person with a history of apparent mental illness, making our case for humane restraint, but doing it a crazy way. His very behavior demonstrates one of the most serious reasons why we should think twice before creating offspring.
One of Lee’s objectives was to get the Discovery Channel to change its programming. He issued a manifesto that demanded, among other things, that, “Focus must be given on how people can live WITHOUT giving birth to more filthy human children since those new additions continue pollution and are pollution. A game show format contest would be in order. Perhaps also forums of leading scientists who understand and agree with the Malthus-Darwin science and the problem of human overpopulation. Do both.”
His ultimate goals were well-intended. Unfortunately, his way of expressing his philosophy did little to advance the case those of us who believe in population reduction are trying to make.
